New Delhi: “Nations do not discuss their strategies during press briefings,” Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said firmly, setting the tone at the Curtain Raiser Press Conference for India Energy Week (IEW) 2026 in New Delhi. His remarks underlined India’s confident and pragmatic approach to global energy challenges amid shifting geopolitics.

India Energy Week 2026: A Global Energy Platform

India Energy Week 2026, scheduled to be held from January 27 to 30 in Goa, is emerging as one of the world’s largest and most influential energy events. The conference will bring together global leaders, energy ministers, CEOs, investors, policymakers, startups, and innovators at a critical moment for global energy security and clean energy transition.

As the first major international energy conference of 2026, IEW places India firmly at the centre of global energy conversations.

Crude Oil Imports and Geopolitical Pressures

Responding to questions about a perceived decline in crude oil imports from Russia amid pressure from the United States, Minister Puri refused to be drawn into speculation. “I am not going into geopolitical strategy. Nations do not discuss their strategies during press briefings,” he said, emphasizing that India’s energy decisions are driven by national interest and long-term stability rather than public commentary.

Energy Supply Is Stable, Prices Under Control

The minister stressed that global energy markets remain stable, supported by rising supplies from countries such as Brazil and Guyana.
“If we have sufficient supply of energy, then prices won’t go up and will remain stable,” Puri said, highlighting diversification as the key to price stability and energy security.

India’s Push for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Addressing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Puri clarified that IEW is part of a broader journey rather than a standalone solution.
“Sustainable aviation fuel will be made in countries like India. For this, you require countries like Brazil, India and China, and you need biomass,” he said, underlining India’s future role in clean aviation fuel production.

No Oil Shortage, Aggressive Domestic Exploration

Reassuring the nation, the minister said India faces no shortage of oil, even as consumption rises. Under the Samudra Manthan initiative, India is accelerating offshore and onshore exploration by drilling multiple wells annually.

Citing Guyana’s experience—where oil was discovered only after drilling 47 wells—Puri emphasized persistence. “We will also drill many wells and are looking for larger, commercially viable quantities,” he said.

Why IEW 2026 Matters for India

India Energy Week 2026 reflects India’s ambition to act as a bridge between conventional fuels and clean energy, while positioning itself as a global energy hub and a major destination for investment. The event also aligns closely with the government’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
