New Delhi: NTPC Limited has terminated the contract awarded to GR Infraprojects Limited (GRIL) for its 400-MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at Mouda Super Thermal Power Station in Maharashtra. The decision was taken citing the contractor’s failure to meet contractual obligations and achieve the required project progress.

The project was awarded to GRIL in March 2026 at a total contract value of Rs 413.37 crore. It was scheduled for completion within 15 months. However, NTPC said the project faced significant delays in critical activities.

NTPC Invokes Contractual Provisions

NTPC said it had issued a contractual notice to GRIL, calling for immediate corrective action. According to the company, the contractor failed to undertake the required remedial measures.

“Accordingly, NTPC has terminated the contract with immediate effect and, in line with contractual provisions, has encashed available securities amounting to approximately Rs 91 crore,” the company said in its statement.

NTPC said the Mouda BESS project is strategically important and is aimed at strengthening grid flexibility and supporting the integration of renewable energy.

Project To Be Re-Tendered

Following the termination, NTPC has initiated the process of re-tendering the project at the risk and cost of GRIL, according to the applicable contractual provisions.

“NTPC is taking necessary measures on priority to facilitate the early re-award and timely implementation of the project,” the company said.

The 400-MWh storage project forms part of NTPC's broader efforts to deploy battery energy storage systems alongside its conventional generation assets. As energy storage gains importance in balancing an increasingly renewable-heavy power system, NTPC is pursuing BESS projects at multiple locations.

The Mouda project was scheduled to be completed within 15 months of its award in March 2026. The termination comes after NTPC determined that the required project progress had not been achieved despite the corrective action notice issued to the contractor.
