Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reportedly directed officials to arrest a serving police employee after a woman accused her husband of marrying another woman and threatening to divorce her.
The complaint was raised during a public grievance-hearing programme attended by the Chief Minister. After listening to the woman, Sarma instructed the officials present to take immediate action and allegedly told them to ensure that the accused was taken into custody the same night.
The man named in the complaint is reportedly employed with Assam Police. However, authorities had not publicly disclosed his identity, posting or the status of any subsequent police action at the time of reporting.
The allegations have also not yet been established before a court. Further details are expected after the complaint is formally examined and the accused is questioned.
The development comes amid the Assam government’s wider campaign against polygamy. The state Assembly passed legislation in 2025 providing punishment for unlawful polygamous marriages, while exempting Sixth Schedule areas and members of certain Scheduled Tribes.

The Assam Budget for 2026–27 has also proposed denying notified welfare benefits to men found practising polygamy. It further proposed changes to service rules under which government employees involved in such marriages could face disciplinary action, including dismissal.
The government has presented these measures as steps intended to strengthen accountability among public servants and protect women’s rights.
