New Delhi: A Special Court for Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act cases in Satara has sentenced Swapnil Jadhav, a Social Security Officer (SSO) with the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), to one year of imprisonment along with a fine of ₹50,000 in a bribery case. The judgment was delivered on February 10, 2026, nearly a decade after the case was registered.

Allegations of Bribe Demand to Avoid Penalty

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had registered the case on March 28, 2016, based on a written complaint. According to the complaint, Jadhav allegedly demanded a bribe of ₹30,000 from a businessman. In return, he reportedly promised not to impose a penalty of ₹3 lakh on the complainant’s firm for employing more than 10 workers under ESIC regulations.

Following negotiations, the accused allegedly agreed to accept ₹25,000 as the bribe amount.

CBI Trap and Arrest

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on the same day the case was registered. The agency caught Swapnil Jadhav red-handed while allegedly accepting ₹25,000 from the complainant. A private individual, Abhijit Jadhav, was also apprehended during the operation. Both were subsequently arrested.

After completing its investigation, the CBI filed a chargesheet on June 28, 2016, against the public servant and the private individual.

Private Individual Acquitted

Following the trial, the court found Swapnil Jadhav guilty under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and awarded him a one-year prison sentence along with a monetary fine. However, the co-accused private individual, Abhijit Jadhav, was acquitted of all charges by the competent court.

The verdict reinforces the judiciary’s stance against corruption among public servants and underscores the CBI’s continued efforts to act against bribery in government institutions.
