New Delhi: Greater Noida police have registered an FIR against two builders following the tragic death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta, who reportedly drowned after his car broke through the boundary wall of a roadside drain and fell into a water-filled basement of an under-construction mall in Sector 150. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday.
Police said the builders, who own the project, have been booked for causing death by negligence. Hemant Upadhyay, ACP of Greater Noida, told HT that a case has been registered at Knowledge Park police station under sections 105 (culpable homicide), 106 (causing death by negligence), and 125 (act endangering life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The FIR was filed following a complaint by Mehta’s father.

According to police, Mehta was driving a Grand Vitara when he lost control while taking a turn. The vehicle hit the drain boundary wall and plunged into the basement, which had accumulated water. Mehta worked as a software engineer in Gurugram.
Police investigations suggest that low visibility and speeding may have contributed to the accident. “They had dug a large drain, around six to seven feet wide. Due to poor visibility and high speed, the driver appears to have lost control,” Upadhyay said.
Emergency teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the state disaster response force, and the fire department, were called in around midnight. After several hours of searching, the teams recovered Mehta’s body. Friends and family have raised concerns about delays in the rescue operation.

One eyewitness, Moninder, who works as a delivery agent, said he reached the scene around 1:45 am and attempted to help Mehta. He described the ordeal as negligence by the authorities, stating that Mehta pleaded for help for nearly two hours before succumbing to the accident.
Pankaj, a friend of the deceased, said rescue teams arrived only by 2:30 am and could not enter the water until 3:20 am. Police explained that sending untrained personnel into the flooded basement could have risked additional casualties.
Authorities are continuing the investigation to determine the exact sequence of events and whether the builders’ negligence contributed to the fatal incident. The case has drawn attention to safety measures at construction sites and emergency response protocols in Greater Noida.
