Haryana IPS Suicide Case: Family agreed for post-mortem? Cremation at 4 pm

Rohtak: The family of senior Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who allegedly died by suicide on October 7, has finally consented to a post-mortem examination, clearing the way for his cremation scheduled today at 4 PM. The decision follows legal pressure, court notices, and growing public demand for transparency into the shocking death that has implicated 16 senior bureaucrats.

Family relents after court notice, govt assurances

Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Anmeet P Kumar, had earlier refused the autopsy, demanding arrests of former Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur and Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya — both named in her husband’s suicide note. But after a Chandigarh court issued a notice requiring her to identify the body, and following assurances from Chandigarh Police and the Haryana government, she gave formal consent

“In view of the assurance extended by the UT Police… I have agreed for the post-mortem to be carried out as per procedure, in the presence of a ballistic expert, under magistrate supervision, and with full videography,” Anmeet said in a written statement.

The post-mortem is being conducted today at PGIMER, Chandigarh, under tight security.

Cremation Scheduled for Today Evening

With the autopsy now proceeding, the cremation of the officer is set for 4 PM today. Senior Chandigarh Police officials, including SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, accompanied the family to the hospital earlier today.

Explosive Suicide Note Names 16 Officials

Kumar, who held the post of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), was found dead with a gunshot wound at his official Chandigarh residence. A note recovered from the scene named 16 senior IAS and IPS officers, accusing them of harassment and professional victimisation, which he claimed led to his suicide.

This prompted widespread demands for accountability and led to the Haryana government placing DGP Shatrujeet Kapur on leave and transferring Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarniya.

Cremation of the officer is set for 4 PM today.

FIR Amended to Include SC/ST Act After Wife’s Plea

After the initial FIR was filed, Anmeet requested the inclusion of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, citing caste-based discrimination. Authorities confirmed that Section 3(2)(v) of the Act has now been added.

Second Suicide Shocks State

In a twist that has deepened the crisis, ASI Sandeep Lather, a cyber cell officer in Rohtak, died by suicide just days later. In a video recorded before his death, Lather accused Puran Kumar of corruption, while defending SP Bijarniya as an honest officer.

This incident has triggered additional investigations and intensified calls for an impartial inquiry.

Rahul Gandhi Visits Bereaved Family

Amid political outrage, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met Kumar’s family earlier this week, expressing solidarity and demanding swift action against those named in the suicide note.

Special SIT to Probe Case

A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Chandigarh IG Pushpendra Kumar has been constituted to carry out a thorough, time-bound probe. But with high-profile names involved and public trust in the administrative machinery shaken, many are questioning whether justice will truly be served.
