New Delhi: At least 10 labourers were killed in a powerful explosion at a coal mine in Meghalaya’s Tashkhai area on Wednesday, triggering large-scale rescue and relief operations by local authorities.

Police and district officials said rescue teams rushed to the spot soon after receiving information about the blast. A massive search operation is currently underway to locate other workers who may still be trapped inside the mine.

Victims Suspected to Be from Assam

According to preliminary inputs, most of the deceased labourers are believed to be from Assam, though the administration has not yet issued an official confirmation regarding their identities.

To ensure smooth rescue operations, the area around the mine has been sealed and additional security personnel have been deployed. Ambulances and emergency services remain on standby.

Probe Ordered into Cause of Blast

Officials have launched an investigation to ascertain the cause of the explosion. Initial assessments point to a possible gas leak or technical malfunction inside the mine, but authorities said the exact reason will be clear only after a detailed inquiry.

Preliminary information confirmed that one of the deceased hailed from Bihara village in Katigara. Authorities are working to identify the remaining victims and notify their families.

Meanwhile, officials have begun investigating the cause of the blast. Safety lapses and illegal mining practices are being examined as possible factors. The incident has once again raised concerns about hazardous working conditions in Meghalaya’s coal mines.

Rescue and relief operations are still underway, and further details are awaited as the situation develops.
