Lawrence of Punjab stopped before release.
New Delhi: The Punjab Police has taken decisive steps to prevent the release of a controversial OTT production titled “Lawrence of Punjab.” Officials stated that the move is part of a broader effort to maintain peace, uphold public order and preserve social harmony across the state.
According to the authorities, concerns were raised regarding the potential impact of the content on law and order. The police emphasized that digital platforms carry significant influence and must ensure responsible storytelling, particularly when dealing with sensitive subjects.
The issue was formally taken up on April 22, 2026, by the Special Director General of Police (Cyber Crime). The officer approached the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MoIB), seeking intervention under Section 69 of the Information Technology Act.
This provision allows the government to restrict access to online content in the interest of national security, public order or to prevent incitement. Officials indicated that the request was made after evaluating the possible ramifications of the series’ release.
Following the request, the Ministry acted promptly. An official advisory was issued directing ZEE5 not to release the content on its streaming platform.
The advisory underscores the government’s increasing scrutiny of digital content and highlights the regulatory mechanisms available to address concerns in the rapidly expanding OTT space. While the Ministry did not publicly detail specific objections, the directive reflects a precautionary approach.
Punjab Police expressed appreciation for the Centre’s swift response, stating that such cooperation is vital in ensuring that media content does not disrupt societal balance.
Officials reiterated that maintaining communal harmony and public peace remains a top priority. They also stressed the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies, regulatory bodies and content platforms to prevent potential unrest.
The development adds to an ongoing national conversation about the regulation of OTT platforms and the boundaries of creative expression. As digital viewership continues to grow, authorities are increasingly focused on ensuring that content aligns with legal and social frameworks.
