Akhilesh Yadav slams BJP over PDA reservation
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Thursday launched a major political attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over its reported promise of providing Rs 20,000 financial assistance to women in Uttar Pradesh.
The SP chief took to his official X handle, alleging that the saffron party's proposed financial assistance announcement is aimed more at electoral gains than long-term women empowerment. He said if the government was serious about providing financial support to women, such a scheme could have been introduced during the last decade instead of being highlighted close to elections.
Yadav claimed that the latest announcement reflects a political strategy designed to influence voter sentiment rather than address deeper economic challenges faced by women, including employment opportunities, household financial pressure and social security concerns.
The SP chief also questioned the implementation record of similar financial assistance announcements made by BJP governments in other states. He alleged that several promises made during election campaigns had faced delays and raised concerns regarding actual delivery mechanisms.
Yadav claimed that women beneficiaries in some states had faced difficulties related to payment processes and administrative procedures. He alleged that instead of ensuring transparent implementation, some governments had relied on legal and administrative actions against citizens facing repayment-related difficulties.
Highlighting his criticism of the BJP’s welfare approach, Akhilesh argued that an annual assistance amount of Rs 50,000 could have been provided to women during the last ten years. Based on this calculation, he claimed that each woman would have received around ₹5 lakh over the decade.
He argued that a proposed payment of Rs 20,000 represents only a small percentage of that amount and alleged that the government had failed to provide the remaining share of women’s financial entitlement.
The statement has intensified the political debate over whether welfare announcements before elections represent genuine social security measures or strategic voter outreach initiatives.
Amid the political clash, Akhilesh Yadav reiterated that the Samajwadi Party would introduce a women-focused financial assistance model starting with Rs 40,000, with provisions for increasing the amount every year.
The proposal was part of a broader vision for economic empowerment, claimed Yadav, adding that financial support for women could improve household stability and strengthen their role in decision-making.
The ruling regime in Uttar Pradesh has faced repeated criticism from opposition parties over welfare schemes and election-time announcements. However, BJP has consistently maintained that its government initiatives are focused on inclusive development, direct benefit transfers and improving the economic condition of citizens.
The BJP’s women-focused programmes have been a major part of its governance narrative, with the party highlighting financial inclusion, gas connections, housing schemes and other social welfare measures as evidence of its commitment towards women’s empowerment.
The controversy comes at a time when women voters are playing an increasingly decisive role in Uttar Pradesh politics. Political analysts believe that parties are competing to create stronger narratives around women’s safety, financial independence and household welfare.
Direct cash benefit schemes have become an important electoral tool across India, with governments using targeted welfare programmes to provide immediate financial relief while opposition parties often question their timing, transparency and sustainability.
