New Delhi: A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court will hear a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today (December 29) challenging the Delhi High Court's order suspending the life sentence of Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the convicted and suspended BJP leader in the 2017 Unnao rape case. The hearing will be conducted by a vacation bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice J.K. Maheshwari, and Justice Augustine George Masih.
The CBI has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court's December 23 order, which granted conditional bail to Sengar while his appeal is pending. The CBI had strongly opposed Sengar's plea in the High Court as well, highlighting the gravity of the crime and the potential risks involved.

The victim's family and women's rights activists have protested against the suspension of Sengar's sentence, stating that the order has "shaken public trust" and sent a wrong message regarding crimes against women. The protesters demanded justice and appealed for security.
The Unnao rape case had sparked outrage across the country. In December 2019, a trial court convicted Sengar of kidnapping and raping a minor girl and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25 lakh. Following this, the Supreme Court transferred all related cases from Uttar Pradesh to Delhi and directed daily trials.

The victim stated on Sunday that she has faith in the Supreme Court and appealed to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to ensure her safety. She alleged that Kuldeep Singh Sengar had bribed the CBI investigating officer and the Delhi High Court judge. She said that her family's situation has been affected, her husband has lost his job, and her children and witnesses are facing threats.
The victim requested the Chief Minister to provide her with adequate security so that she can fight for justice without fear.
