Durgapur: In a swift action, the West Bengal Police have arrested five men in connection with the gang-rape of a 23-year-old medical student near a private college in Durgapur. Those arrested include a former security guard of the same college, a hospital worker, a temporary civic body employee, and an unemployed man. The fifth accused is also being questioned for his role in aiding the assault.

Officials said forensic evidence and CCTV footage from nearby areas helped track down the suspects within 48 hours of the crime. The police have assured that a watertight case is being prepared for trial under stringent provisions of the law.

Survivor’s Testimony

In her statement recorded during treatment accessed by India Today- the young woman described her ordeal in painful detail. “We noticed that they were leaving their vehicle and coming towards us. We started running towards the forest. Then those three people came running after us, caught me, and dragged me into the forest,” she told the doctor.

She further recalled, “They grabbed me from behind, took my phone and told me to call my friend. When he didn’t come, they forced me to lie down. When I screamed, they said if I make noise, they will call more men and they would do it too.”

How the Attack Happened

The incident occurred late Friday night when the survivor, a second-year medical student originally from Jaleswar in Odisha, went out for dinner with a friend. While returning, they were intercepted by a group of men near the college campus.

According to investigators, as the student tried to escape, the attackers chased her into a nearby forest area. They allegedly overpowered her, took away her phone, and dragged her deeper inside the woods before committing the heinous crime.

Nation Outraged, Calls for Justice

The brutal assault has triggered outrage in West Bengal and Odisha, with protests erupting near the college demanding justice. Student unions and women’s rights groups have urged for immediate fast-track court proceedings.

Authorities have promised the strictest punishment for those found guilty, assuring that the case will be pursued on a priority basis.
