Sushant Singh Rajput’s family slams CBI closure report as ‘Eyewash’; Rhea back in spotlight

New Delhi: On 22 March 2025, the CBI submitted closure reports in two cases concerning the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, one initiated by his father and another by his ex-girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty. The reports concluded there was no evidence of abetment of suicide, illegal confinement or financial misconduct in his case.

Specifically, the investigators stated that Rajput had died by suicide, and that no proof emerged of Rhea or others driving him to do so.

Family Rejects Report as “Eyewash”

However, the actor’s family represented by lawyer Varun Singh has strongly rejected the CBI’s closure report. They described it as “nothing but an eyewash” and accused the agency of conducting a “shoddy investigation”.

CBI Clears Rhea Chakraborty in Sushant Singh Rajput Case; Family Disagrees

Their key complaints include:

The report was filed without attaching supporting documents (chat logs, technical records, witness statements, medical records).

Simply stating that “funds weren’t misappropriated” isn’t enough, without producing bank statements or clear proof.

The family intends to file a protest petition to challenge the closure and seek further proceedings.

Findings of the Report

According to the CBI’s conclusions:

Between 8 June 2020 (the date after which Rhea left the actor’s residence) and 14 June 2020 (his death), there is no evidence of Rhea visiting or communicating with him in a way that would indicate coercion or confinement.

On allegations of theft or embezzlement of Rajput’s property, the report mentions only items which he himself had gifted to Rhea (an Apple laptop, a wristwatch) and found no proof of dishonest appropriation of his assets by her or others.

The medical-forensic review by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) ruled out poisoning or strangulation and supported the suicide finding.

What Happens Next?

The actor’s family will approach the court to contest the closure, arguing that the investigation remains incomplete and the findings cannot be accepted as final without transparency.

The court will decide whether to accept the closure report or order further investigation or revision. Legal experts note that a closure report does not automatically mean the case is disposed; courts can still take cognizance or deep-dive if persuaded.

Meanwhile, Rhea Chakraborty’s legal team welcomed the CBI’s report, stating she had endured “untold miseries” and now hopes the case’s conclusion brings relief.

Background and Context

Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra apartment on 14 June 2020 at the age of 34. His death set off a massive public and media uproar, with allegations of foul play, financial exploitation and mental harassment swirling around his circle. Rhea Chakraborty was arrested in connection with the case and spent time in custody, before being released on bail. Over the years, investigations by the CBI and other agencies sought to establish whether his death was a simple suicide or part of a larger conspiracy.
