Kolkata: Political tensions in West Bengal intensified on Thursday after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the killing of his personal assistant Chandranath Rath was a “premeditated murder” linked to the state’s fiercely contested political environment.
Speaking to reporters at Rath’s residence in Madhyamgram, Adhikari claimed the attack was carefully planned and suggested that his electoral victory over Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur could have been a possible reason behind the killing.
He said Rath had no criminal history or known personal rivalry and was targeted only because he worked closely with him.

Adhikari stated that the murder was executed with precision and accused unidentified assailants of conducting surveillance on Rath before carrying out the shooting. According to him, the attackers followed Rath’s movements for several days and opened fire at close range to ensure what he described as an “instant death.”
He further claimed that medical findings indicated multiple bullets were fired at Rath, reinforcing his allegation that the killing was not random but part of a deliberate operation. Calling it a “cold-blooded” attack, the BJP leader said the family wanted strict punishment for those involved.
The killing has triggered strong political reactions in the state ahead of the formation of the new government in West Bengal. BJP workers and supporters have accused the ruling establishment of failing to maintain law and order, while opposition leaders have demanded a transparent investigation.
Adhikari also assured Rath’s family of full support and said he would personally monitor efforts to secure justice. He stressed that the accused should be arrested quickly and prosecuted under the strictest provisions of the law.

Police have launched an investigation into the shooting, which took place in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas. Officials are examining all possible angles, including political motives and organised criminal involvement. Security agencies are also reviewing CCTV footage and collecting forensic evidence from the crime scene.
The murder has once again put the spotlight on political violence in West Bengal, with both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress trading accusations over the deteriorating political atmosphere in the state.
