Kolkata: Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav met TMC  supremo Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata on Thursday, days after the TMC suffered a major defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.

The meeting took place at Mamata Banerjee’s residence and was also attended by TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. According to party sources, the Samajwadi Party chief extended emotional support to Mamata Banerjee following the party’s electoral setback.

‘You have not lost’: Akhilesh to Mamata

Sources said Akhilesh Yadav told Mamata Banerjee, “Didi, you have not lost,” during the interaction. He also reportedly praised the TMC leadership for the fight they put up during the Assembly elections.

Speaking to Abhishek Banerjee, Akhilesh is said to have remarked that the party had fought a “commendable battle” despite the challenging political environment.

The meeting comes at a time when opposition parties are reassessing strategies after the Bharatiya Janata Party’s decisive victory in West Bengal.

BJP ends TMC’s 15-year rule

The BJP secured 207 seats in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, crossing the two-thirds majority mark and ending the TMC’s uninterrupted 15-year tenure in power. The Mamata Banerjee-led party was reduced to 80 seats.

The outcome marked one of the most significant political shifts in the state in recent years and has triggered discussions within opposition parties regarding future political alignments.

Focus on opposition unity

Political sources indicated that Akhilesh Yadav and Mamata Banerjee also discussed the post-election political situation and the future of opposition coordination against the BJP.

Mamata Banerjee has already stated that she intends to remain active in national politics and strengthen the INDIA bloc despite the electoral defeat in Bengal.
