London: An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to 34 years in prison in the United Kingdom after being convicted of multiple serious offences, including kidnap, rape, false imprisonment and causing grievous bodily harm.

The sentence was handed down by a London court after 34-year-old Gagandeep Singh was found guilty earlier this year following a trial that examined allegations of prolonged abuse against a young woman.

Conviction Follows Serious Criminal Charges

According to court proceedings, Singh was convicted on two counts of rape, as well as charges relating to kidnap, false imprisonment and intentional grievous bodily harm. He will serve 28 years in custody followed by an extended six-year licence period under strict supervision.

The court ruled that he will not be eligible for parole until he has completed at least two-thirds of his custodial sentence.

Victim Subjected to Prolonged Abuse

The case centred on a 24-year-old woman who was taken to a property in west London in June 2024 after returning to the UK from Thailand. Court records indicated that she became suspicious after being asked to transport a suitcase containing unknown items and refused to do so.

Prosecutors said she was later transported to London, where she was unlawfully detained and subjected to repeated abuse over an extended period before being released.

Investigation Led to Arrest

Police said the victim initially found it difficult to disclose the full details of her experience due to trauma and fears for her safety. Investigators credited her family, particularly her mother, for preserving key evidence and encouraging her to seek justice.

Forensic examinations and subsequent inquiries helped officers identify and arrest the accused.

Survivor Praised for Courage

Detectives involved in the investigation described the survivor’s determination as instrumental in securing the conviction. The Metropolitan Police said her cooperation throughout the investigation and trial helped ensure accountability in a complex case.

Authorities also reiterated their commitment to tackling violence against women and girls through specialist support services and enhanced investigative measures.

The case has drawn attention to the importance of reporting serious crimes and supporting survivors throughout the legal process.
