Mumbai: Director Abhijeet Mohan Warang’s latest film, Aakhri Sawal, delivers a gripping, intellectually charged drama centered on debates about the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and India’s historical narratives.

Anchored by a strong performance from Sanjay Dutt, the movie delves into the distinction between superficial appearances and genuine service to the nation, while addressing misconceptions surrounding Indian politics in the age of social media.

A Story of Mentorship, Conflict, and National Discourse

The plot follows Professor Gopal Nadkarni (Sanjay Dutt) and his former student Vicky Hegde (Namashi Chakraborty). When Vicky publicly accuses his mentor of institutional bias after his thesis on the RSS is rejected, a personal disagreement escalates into a nationally debated topic. The story unfolds through intense television debates and social media discourse, touching upon sensitive historical events including Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, the Emergency period, the Babri Masjid demolition, and the humanitarian efforts of the RSS during crises like the tsunami.

Dialogue-Driven Drama with Educational Insights

The script, penned by Utkarsh Naithani, shines in its ability to present both myths and facts about the RSS in a clear and believable manner. The conversations between Dutt and Chakraborty form the backbone of the film, offering insightful explanations of Hindu and Islamic cultural references and historical contexts that are often overlooked. These dialogues successfully simplify complex ideas, making the film both informative and engaging.

Innovative Use of AI in Historical Storytelling

Aakhri Sawal also stands out for its use of AI-generated footage to depict historical events. Instead of relying solely on archival material, the filmmakers employ technology creatively, enhancing the visual storytelling while maintaining authenticity. Each scene reflects meticulous attention to detail and craftsmanship.

Strong Performances Lead the Way

Sanjay Dutt impresses with his command over Hindi and Sanskrit dialogues, bringing authority and nuance to Professor Nadkarni. Namashi Chakraborty complements him well, portraying Vicky Hegde as an intelligent, determined, and passionate student. Amit Sadh makes a memorable impact in a brief role as Aditya Rao, while Mrunal Kulkarni delivers a heartfelt performance as the professor’s wife.

However, performances from Sameera Reddy, Tridha Choudhury, and Neetu Chandra feel less convincing, mostly serving decorative purposes. Supporting actors like Bipin Nadkarni, Harsimran Oberoi, and Rocky Raina provide solid contributions.

Direction and Screenplay

Director Abhijeet Mohan Warang’s tight editing and focused storytelling keep the 117-minute film engaging, particularly in the second half. The climax, structured around a fact-based debate, is a high point, reflecting careful planning and execution.

Music and Score

Monty Sharma’s background score complements the film’s tone effectively. The closing track, Hai Preet Jahan Ki Reet Sada, with lyrics by Indeevar, leaves a lasting impression on viewers.
