Mumbai: Actor Imran Khan has submitted an unconditional apology  to the Bombay High Court over his participation in a Mumbai protest linked to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The development came during the hearing of his petition challenging a notice directing him to leave India.

The court also sought an assurance that the actor would not participate in similar demonstrations in the future.

Bombay High Court Questions Actor's Participation

During the hearing , the Bombay High Court questioned Khan's involvement in the protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The court observed that Khan, being a US citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, could not be treated on the same footing as Indian citizens when it came to participating in political demonstrations.

Following the court's observations, Khan tendered an unconditional apology and gave an undertaking concerning his future participation in such protests.

Imran Khan Challenges FRRO's Leave India Notice

The controversy began after Khan was detained by Mumbai Police on October 10 during a demonstration near August Kranti Maidan. The protest was organised against the Chief Election Commissioner over concerns surrounding the SIR exercise.

Subsequently, the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued a notice on October 14, directing the actor to leave India by October 28.

The action followed a complaint by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, who alleged that Khan's participation in the demonstration violated the rules applicable to foreign nationals and OCI cardholders.

Court Extends Interim Protection

Khan approached the Bombay High Court, challenging the FRRO's decision. His petition questioned the basis of the notice and the procedure followed by the authorities.

On November 2, the court continued the interim protection, with the matter scheduled for further consideration on December 7.

The proceedings will determine the next course of action in Khan's challenge to the FRRO notice.
