New Delhi: The INDIA Bloc is preparing a fresh political offensive over alleged electoral-roll irregularities, with opposition parties planning a symbolic “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar on October 30.
The proposed event is expected to be held on the lawns of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s official residence in Delhi. Around 200 opposition MPs are likely to participate, while the proceedings are expected to be broadcast live on social media.
The initiative aims to highlight opposition allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the reported deletion of voters’ names. Opposition parties have repeatedly raised concerns about electoral transparency and accused the BJP of benefiting from alleged irregularities—charges that require independent scrutiny. According to party insiders, the event is intended to demonstrate unity within the INDIA Bloc and take its campaign directly to the public.
Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar is reportedly expected to preside over the programme. The decision was taken during a strategy meeting held by INDIA Bloc leaders to coordinate the October 30 event. Congress Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Javed reportedly said the initiative would give the opposition a public platform to raise concerns after its attempts to initiate proceedings seeking the CEC’s removal did not advance in Parliament.
Organisers reportedly considered the lawns of the Ashoka Hotel and Ramlila Maidan before choosing Kharge’s residence following permission-related difficulties at the earlier venues. The event comes just two days before the INDIA Bloc’s planned November 1 rally at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.
The proposed “public impeachment” is a symbolic political exercise, not a formal constitutional process for removing the CEC. Its central message is expected to focus on electoral accountability and the opposition’s demand for greater transparency in voter-list revision.
