Mumbai: The rules for Indian films are set to change as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) introduces revised guidelines for film certification. Under the updated framework, movies featuring scenes related to drug consumption or trafficking will have to display a mandatory anti-drug warning.
The new guidelines aim to regulate the portrayal of sensitive subjects on screen while focusing on responsible storytelling and viewer awareness.
According to the revised rules, filmmakers will need to add a statutory warning whenever a film shows the use, consumption or trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The warning will remind viewers about the harmful effects and legal consequences linked to illegal narcotics.
Earlier, CBFC rules focused on ensuring that films did not promote or glorify drug abuse. The revised guidelines now add a compulsory warning requirement for such scenes.
The updated certification rules also bring greater focus on scenes involving violence, sexual violence, child-related issues, communal themes and other sensitive subjects.
The CBFC guidelines state that content should not encourage or glorify criminal activities, harmful behaviour or exploitation.
Filmmakers will have to consider these aspects while preparing movies for certification.
The revised framework continues the age-based certification system, including categories such as UA 7+, UA 13+ and UA 16+.
The system is designed to help parents and viewers understand whether a film is suitable for younger audiences.
The latest changes will require filmmakers to carefully handle scenes involving drugs, violence and other sensitive topics.
Production houses will need to ensure that films follow the updated certification requirements before their theatrical release.
