New Delhi: Following the demise of Sunjay Kapur, a dispute has erupted within the family regarding his assets. This dispute primarily involves his third wife, Priya Kapur, and his children from his former wife, Karisma Kapoor.

Granting interim relief in this matter, the Delhi High Court has ordered that Sunjay Kapur’s assets be preserved for the time being. The Court explicitly stated that until the matter is fully adjudicated, the assets cannot be sold or transferred.

Parties involved in the dispute

The key figures in this case are:

  • Karisma Kapoor’s children: Samaira and Kiaan
  • Sunjay Kapur’s third wife: Priya Kapur
  • Sunjay’s mother: Rani Kapur

The children are staking a claim to their share, asserting their status as "Class-I heirs."

Questions Raised Over the Will

The children and other family members have raised doubts regarding the validity of Sunjay Kapur’s will. The Court observed that there are "suspicious circumstances" surrounding the will, and the onus of proving its authenticity will lie with Priya Kapur.

A comprehensive examination of this matter will now take place during the trial proceedings.

The Court has imposed restrictions on several key assets:

  • Shares and equity holdings in Indian companies
  • Withdrawals from bank accounts
  • Usage of foreign bank accounts
  • Transfer of crypto assets
  • Sale of high-value artworks

Additionally, properties located in New York and London are also part of this dispute, although the court cannot issue direct orders regarding foreign assets.

The children have alleged that while their father’s income was substantial, the balances reflected in his bank accounts appeared disproportionately low. This discrepancy has raised questions regarding the transparency of the entire affair.

The case will now proceed in court, and it is only after the trial that a final determination will be made regarding the authentic will and the respective shares to be allocated to each claimant.

Until then, all assets shall remain preserved. This case is significant not only as a high-profile family dispute but also from a legal perspective. It illustrates just how complex property-related disputes can become, even within prominent families.
