New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has demanded compensation from Iran for people killed in wars and attacks, saying the issue of reparations will be part of all future negotiations between Washington and Tehran.
Trump's remarks come amid efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran and reach an understanding over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. He accused Iran of being responsible for deaths in various conflicts, attacks and other incidents.
Trump's statement came in response to Iran's demand that the United States compensate it for damages caused by recent attacks and meet other conditions.
Tehran has also called for the lifting of sanctions, an end to military pressure and the blockade, and the release of Iranian assets that have been seized.
Trump accused Iran of responsibility for roadside bomb attacks and deaths in various conflicts. He also said Iran should be held responsible for losses and deaths in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Gaza.
Trump additionally raised the issue of compensation for the families of American service members killed in the USS Cole attack. However, Al-Qaeda was held responsible for that attack.
Iran has said it is close to reaching an agreement with Oman on new shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Tehran has indicated that the decision to fully reopen the strategic waterway would depend on US actions.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said the United States would have to meet Iran's demands. Communications between Tehran and Washington are currently taking place through intermediaries rather than through direct talks.
Following Trump's remarks and Iran's demands, Brent crude oil prices rose by around 4.25 percent. Gas prices in Britain and the Netherlands also increased by more than 10 percent.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial global energy route. Before the conflict, around one-fifth of the world's oil and LNG shipments passed through the waterway. Its effective closure has increased concerns across global energy markets.
