Salman Khan Defamation Case Explained
Mumbai: A Mumbai civil court has granted interim relief to Bollywood superstar Salman Khan in his defamation case against filmmaker Abhinav Kashyap, temporarily restraining the director from making or circulating any “derogatory” remarks against the actor and his family. The order, passed on January 30, comes amid a Rs 9 crore defamation suit filed by Khan seeking damages and a permanent injunction.
While hearing the plea, Judge P.G. Bhosale observed that the right to freedom of speech and expression does not extend to the use of abusive, threatening or defamatory language against an individual or their family members. The court noted that no one has the right to malign another person’s reputation under the garb of free speech.

The interim order bars Abhinav Kashyap from publishing, sharing or repeating any statements that could be considered defamatory, insulting or derogatory towards Salman Khan, his brother Arbaaz Khan, or other members of the Khan family until the matter is decided.
In its observations, the court stated that the remarks made by Kashyap appeared to be “prima facie defamatory, abusive and derogatory” in nature. It added that such statements had the potential to damage the actor’s public image and personal reputation in the eyes of the general public.
The court further emphasised that every individual has the right to protect their dignity, privacy and reputation, and that families should not be dragged into personal disputes through public accusations.
In his civil defamation suit, Salman Khan alleged that Kashyap had made a series of false and scandalous claims against him and his family across multiple platforms, including interviews, podcasts and online videos. The actor claimed these statements questioned his professional integrity, personal character and family reputation.
According to the plea, at least 26 such video interviews and public statements were released between September and December 2025, despite the actor choosing not to publicly respond to the allegations.

Apart from Abhinav Kashyap, the suit also names several YouTube channels and social media content creators who allegedly amplified the statements. The interim order extends to restraining the circulation of similar content by these entities as well.
Abhinav Kashyap had directed Salman Khan’s 2010 film Dabangg and has, in recent years, publicly accused the actor and his family of professional harassment and interference. These claims intensified over the past few months, prompting Khan to approach the court for legal remedy.
The case will continue to be heard, with the court expected to examine the merits of the defamation claims before deciding on permanent relief.
