A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Monday morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 250. The city of Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, was reportedly the hardest hit. Samangan province also suffered significant damage.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck at a depth of 28 kilometers near Mazar-e-Sharif, a city with a population of approximately 523,000. Samim Joyinda, a spokesman for the Samangan provincial health department, said the death and injured figures are based on hospital reports received as of Monday morning.

Balkh provincial spokesman Haji Zaid said that a portion of Mazar-e-Sharif's famous Blue Mosque was also damaged in the earthquake. The country's National Disaster Management Agency said that detailed details of casualties and damage would be shared later. Videos shared on the social media platform X showed rescue workers rescuing people trapped under rubble.
Thousands of people were killed in the August earthquake and subsequent aftershocks in Afghanistan. The country is located in a highly earthquake-prone region. An earthquake in 2015 killed hundreds of people in Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, while another in 2023 killed more than a thousand people.
