Unsafe building structure in Delhi highlights the growing challenge of maintaining safety (IMg: X)
New Delhi: The recent Satya Niketan building collapse has once again raised serious questions over the safety of structures in the national capital. While the tragedy highlighted the dangers of weak and unsafe buildings, fresh data from the Delhi Fire Service reveals that the problem is much larger.
According to Delhi Fire Service records, more than 330 building-related calls were received between January 1 and September 6, with these incidents resulting in 30 deaths and 120 injuries.
Officials said these calls were not limited to major building collapses. The complaints also included reports of structural cracks, falling bricks, roof collapses and other safety concerns.
The data indicates that several buildings across Delhi may be facing structural issues, creating risks for residents and occupants.
The issue gained renewed attention after the collapse of a five-storey building in South Delhi’s Satya Niketan area. The incident claimed the lives of seven people, while several others were injured.
Following the tragedy, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) began the controlled demolition of an adjoining building that was declared unsafe after inspection.
Officials said the structure was temporarily supported with iron guardrails as a precautionary measure before demolition work began.
The growing number of complaints has triggered concerns over building inspections, maintenance and enforcement of safety rules in Delhi.
Experts believe that regular structural audits and strict action against unsafe constructions are necessary to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The latest figures suggest that the Satya Niketan collapse may not be an isolated incident but part of a wider building safety challenge facing the capital.
