Chongqing: On Friday, 17th July 2026, a landslide occurred in Pengshui County on the outskirts of Chongqing municipality. The landslide has buried more than 10 residential buildings, as per state broadcaster CCTV. The rescue team has sent 10 people to the hospital, whereas more than 1,100 people have been relocated.
The visuals coming out from the ground show that one of the fallen rocks appeared larger than a multistory building. As per media reports, one of the damaged buildings had its top part crushed and a car was seen half-buried near another building.
The landslide consisted of around 18,000 cubic meters of rocks and debris, and the largest single rock was around 3,000 cubic meters, as per the head of Planning and Natural Resources in Pengshui County.

The state media stated persistent rain hit Pengshui from Friday night (17th July) to Saturday morning (18th July) and around 8 inches of rainfall was recorded at a weather station. Due to the unstable weather conditions, the rescue became more challenging. When the rain eased slightly, the rescue teams entered the site to conduct on-the-ground inspections of the collapsed building and riverbank areas.
The rescue operations are carried out on one side of the massive rocks. The teams will later need to look beneath them, when they may risk injury if the boulders become unstable and slide, as 34 people are still missing, as reported by the state broadcaster.
China’s National Development and Reform Commission on Saturday, 18th July 2026, has announced a relief fund of 30 million yuan, which is around Rs 42.7 crore, to support the restoration of infrastructure and public service facilities following the disaster.
