New Delhi: A recent incident involving the US stopping and seizing a Venezuelan oil tanker in international waters has sparked a new controversy in global politics. China has strongly criticized the move, calling it an arbitrary act and a violation of international law. The incident occurred on December 20, 2025, near the Venezuelan coast, when the US military intercepted an oil tanker.
A White House official claimed that the tanker was part of a so-called “shadow fleet.” A shadow fleet is a network of older, often unregistered vessels that operate clandestinely, transporting oil, weapons, or other prohibited goods while concealing their identities. Their purpose is to circumvent international sanctions and regulations. The US alleges that this network is involved in illegal activities.
US Seizes Venezuelan Oil Tanker, Escalating Tensions in South America
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian condemned the US action as a violation of international law. He stated that China opposes all unilateral sanctions that have not been authorized by the UN Security Council. China believes that the forceful seizure of foreign vessels by any country violates the principles of the UN Charter, sovereignty, and international security.
China clarified that Venezuela has every right to cooperate freely with other countries on the basis of mutual benefit. China also believes that the international community understands Venezuela's situation and supports the protection of its legitimate rights.
The US has been steadily increasing its military presence in the maritime area surrounding Venezuela in recent months. President Donald Trump has designated the Maduro government in Venezuela as a foreign terrorist organization and targeted the country's oil supply. He has ordered a complete blockade of all approved oil tankers traveling to and from Venezuela.
Venezuela agrees to supply oil to India in lieu of pending dividend
Venezuela has described the US action as the beginning of “naval piracy” in the Caribbean region. This situation is also highly sensitive for China, as it has been a close strategic partner of Venezuela for decades and is also its largest oil buyer. Both Russia and China are in a position to challenge US dominance in the region, which is likely to further escalate global geopolitical tensions.
