Thailand Rail Tragedy
Bangkok: A major rail accident has occurred in Thailand, resulting in significant loss of life and injuries. A passenger train derailed after a construction crane collapsed onto the moving train.
The tragic incident has claimed at least 22 lives, while more than 30 people have been injured, according to Thai authorities. The accident has sent shockwaves across the country and raised serious concerns about construction safety near active railway lines.
The accident took place on Wednesday morning in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province. This area lies approximately 230 kilometers northeast of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok.
The train involved in the accident was a passenger service traveling toward Ubon Ratchathani province, a northeastern region of the country.
Officials confirmed that the derailment was caused by a crane that fell onto the train. The crane was reportedly being used for the construction of an elevated high-speed railway project.
This new railway line is intended to connect Bangkok with Ubon Ratchathani. While construction work was underway, the crane unexpectedly collapsed and landed directly on the moving passenger train. The impact caused several coaches to derail and triggered a fire.
Nakhon Ratchasima police chief Thatchapon Chinnawong told news agency AFP that at least 22 people have died in the accident, and many others were injured. Emergency services rushed to the site immediately.

Initial reports from the provincial public relations department stated that at least four bodies had been recovered from the wreckage early in the rescue operation, with fears that more victims could be trapped inside the train.
Live footage aired by local media showed a chaotic scene at the accident site. The brightly colored passenger train was seen overturned to one side, with smoke rising from the debris.
Firefighters managed to bring the fire under control, while rescue workers continued search and rescue operations. Teams are still combing through the damaged coaches to locate any passengers who may be trapped inside.
The Nakhon Ratchasima Public Relations Department confirmed via a Facebook post that the fire has been extinguished and that rescue operations are ongoing.
Authorities are working to ensure that all victims are accounted for and that the injured receive medical treatment. An investigation is expected to determine how the crane collapse occurred and whether safety protocols were followed during construction.
