Hong Kong set to become international mediation hub in significant global milestone

Hong Kong:  Hong Kong is set to host the headquarters of the newly formed International Organization for Mediation (IOMed), marking a major milestone in the city’s efforts to establish itself as a global centre for legal and diplomatic dispute resolution, reports Dynamite News correspondent.

The formal signing of the convention establishing IOMed will take place on 30 May, with support from Beijing and attendance expected from top Chinese officials, including Foreign Minister Wang Yi.Renovation work is underway at the historic Wan Chai Police Station, which will house the headquarters, scheduled to open by late 2025 or early 2026, reports South China Morning Post. Chief Executive John Lee said the decision to base IOMed in Hong Kong reflects strong international confidence in the city’s legal infrastructure.

“As the world’s only bilingual common law jurisdiction, with deep expertise in both Chinese and international law, Hong Kong offers an ideal environment for global mediation,” he said.

Under the "one country, two systems" framework, Hong Kong maintains a separate legal system from mainland China.

It has long been recognised for its rule of law, independent judiciary, and a wealth of multilingual legal talent—factors that make it a strong contender for resolving cross-border disputes.

Lee added that IOMed will also bring a host of economic advantages: job creation in mediation, translation, legal research, and administration, as well as increased international interest from NGOs, academic institutions, and global conferences. The knock-on effect is expected to benefit the hospitality, transport, and logistics sectors.

Deputy Secretary for Justice Horace Cheung said IOMed marks “the first time an intergovernmental international organisation has chosen Hong Kong as its home,” calling it a key step in raising the city’s global profile.
