Gumi: Gulveer Singh has set a new precedent by winning the gold medal in the men's 10,000-meter race at the Asian Athletics Championships. He has become the third Indian athlete to achieve this feat, reports Dynamite News correspondent.
Earlier, Harischandra (1975) and G. Lakshmanan (2017) had won this title. This is India's first gold medal at the ongoing Asian Athletics Championships in 2025. Gulveer also holds the Indian national record and remained ahead for most of the race. In the last moments, he managed to win the gold medal by increasing his speed.
Gulveer also won a bronze medal in the 5000 meters at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships. During this, Sawan Barwal was also in the race, but he missed the bronze medal and finished fourth.
Gulveer Singh is a resident of Sirsa, Haryana, and recently he also participated in the Diamond League. Gulveer completed this race in 28:38.63 minutes. In the final lap, Gulveer overtook Bahrain's Albert Kibichi Rop to take the first position. He won the bronze medal in the 5000m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships.
Apart from this, 26-year-old Gulveer won the bronze medal in the 10,000m race at the 2022 Asian Games and also got a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok.
Gulveer also won the gold medal in the 10,000m at the Indian National Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championships. In 2025, he set his personal best of 12:59.77 in the 5000m at the Boston University Terrier DMR Challenge.
During this, he was just behind Olympic champion Cole Hocker and his training partner Cooper Terre. Gulveer's great victory has sent a wave of happiness across the country, and he is being congratulated. This victory is the result of his hard work and dedication.
The 2025 Asian Athletics Championships take place in Gumi, Republic of Korea from 27-31 May. Over 2,000 athletes from 43 countries are taking part in the event which is being held in Korea for the first time since the 2005 edition in Incheon.
