16 Indian sailors detained by IRGC amid Iran unrest
New Delhi: Sixteen Indian sailors have been held by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for more than a month, triggering deep concern among their families, who are now appealing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for urgent intervention.
The sailors were detained after their vessel was allegedly seized despite being in international waters. With Iran currently witnessing violent protests and instability, anxiety over the crew’s safety has intensified.
According to a report, the incident dates back to December 8, 2025. The tanker Valiant Roar, operated by Dubai-based Glory International FZ ALC, was anchored near Dibba port in the UAE due to a technical malfunction. The vessel was carrying very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO).
Captain Vijay Kumar and his crew were awaiting assistance from their sister ship, MT Coral Wave, which was heading to Khor Fakkan for repairs.
During this period, IRGC forces reportedly began pursuing the tanker, opened fire, seized the vessel, and took the Indian crew members into custody.
