Rekha Gupta orders crackdown on unsafe PGs after Satya Niketan building collapse
New Delhi: Days after the Satya Niketan building collapse raised concerns over student safety and accommodation in the area, the Delhi government has announced plans to construct hostels for 10,000 students across the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the facilities will provide safer, secure and affordable accommodation to students enrolled in Delhi colleges and universities.
The proposed facilities will cater to both male and female students. According to the Chief Minister, any student enrolled in a university or college in Delhi will be eligible to use the hostel facilities.
The announcement assumes significance for areas such as Satya Niketan, which has long been associated with a large student population and private accommodation options because of its proximity to several educational institutions.

Students living in and around Satya Niketan often rely on rented rooms, paying guest facilities and shared accommodation. The availability and affordability of suitable housing remain important considerations for students moving to Delhi from other parts of the country.
The government's proposed hostel network could therefore offer an alternative for students seeking secure and relatively affordable accommodation in the city.
Rekha Gupta said the Delhi government has already held meetings with departments that can undertake hostel construction. Officials have also identified potential locations and started work on drafting a policy for the project.
The government is examining students' requirements, including the facilities and amenities that would need to be provided inside the hostels.
Emphasising safety and security, the Chief Minister said the government wants to create accommodation where parents from across the country can leave their children with complete peace of mind.
She also said the aim is to ensure that students do not remain burdened by concerns over food and accommodation and can instead concentrate on their education and career goals.
The proposed 10,000-bed hostel initiative could provide a significant boost to Delhi's student accommodation infrastructure, particularly as demand for affordable housing continues to remain high in established student hubs such as Satya Niketan.
