Iran Tensions Escalate: Commercial tanker hit by projectile, catches fire in Strait of Hormuz

Dubai: A commercial tanker caught fire after being struck by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman early Tuesday, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the vessel was sailing south from the Strait of Hormuz towards the Gulf of Oman when it was hit near Limah in Oman. The projectile struck the port side of the tanker, triggering a fire onboard.

Authorities said the blaze was brought under control and there was no immediate environmental impact. An investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.

No claim of responsibility

No group has claimed responsibility for the strike. However, the incident comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Iran suspected of carrying out attacks on other commercial vessels transiting the same route in recent days.

While officials have not formally attributed Tuesday's attack to any country, the timing has intensified scrutiny over security in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor.

Attack follows Iran's warning

The latest incident occurred days after Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya military command warned that all oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz must use routes approved by Tehran or face a "forceful response."

The warning came shortly after indirect talks between US and Iranian officials in Qatar aimed at easing regional tensions. Tehran did not specify the reasons behind the advisory.

US backs freedom of navigation

Amid growing concerns, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said regional leaders meeting in Bahrain had reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the free flow of commerce through the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement underscored international efforts to maintain safe navigation through the strategic waterway despite escalating tensions.

Critical global shipping route

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas exports passing through it every day.
