New Delhi: A 10-day ceasefire has come into effect between Israel and Lebanon, yet the situation has not yet fully stabilized. Israel's Defense Minister has explicitly stated that the ongoing campaign against Hezbollah is not yet complete.
According to the Defense Minister, the Israeli military has achieved several significant successes; however, certain areas in southern Lebanon have not yet been fully cleared. Weapons and combatants may still be present in these zones, and their removal has been deemed essential.
Israel has indicated that, in order to clear these areas, either a diplomatic path will be pursued, or military operations may resume once the ceasefire expires. This signals that a resumption of hostilities remains a possibility in the future.
As soon as the ceasefire took effect, thousands of people began returning to their homes. However, Israel has issued a warning that should fighting resume, these individuals may once again be forced to abandon their homes.
The Security Zone Will Remain
Israel has established a security zone extending approximately 10 kilometers along its border with Lebanon. This area has been cleared, and efforts are underway to eliminate any and all terrorist activity within it. Israel has affirmed that it intends to maintain control over this zone.
Under the terms of the ceasefire agreement, Lebanon is required to ensure that Hezbollah refrains from launching any attacks against Israel. Conversely, Israel retains the right to take action to preempt potential attacks should the need arise.
Although the ceasefire is now in effect, the situation remains precarious. Israel's firm stance and its warnings regarding the future demonstrate that peace has not yet been fully established in the region. The days ahead will determine the trajectory of this conflict.
