New Delhi: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will visit India from July 1 to 3 for the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit, marking her first official trip to the country after assuming office.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold summit-level talks with Takaichi in New Delhi, with both sides expected to review the full range of bilateral cooperation, including trade, investment, defence, technology, infrastructure and people-to-people ties. The two leaders are also likely to witness the exchange of several Memorandums of Cooperation and take part in the Japan-India Joint Economic Forum, where officials and business leaders will explore ways to expand commercial partnerships.

The visit comes at a time when India and Japan are looking to deepen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. PM Modi’s visit to Japan last year had laid out a roadmap for cooperation over the next decade, with focus areas such as defence, innovation, technology, investment and regional connectivity.

Economic security is expected to be one of the major themes of the summit. The two countries are likely to discuss stronger cooperation in strategic sectors such as semiconductors, critical minerals, battery technology, artificial intelligence and pharmaceuticals. Both sides are also expected to explore ways to build resilient supply chains and promote long-term investment.

Maritime security and the Indo-Pacific will also be high on the agenda. Japan views India as a key partner in advancing its Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision, while New Delhi is expected to link the discussions with its MAHASAGAR initiative. Defence technology collaboration and connectivity between the Bay of Bengal region and India’s North-East may also feature in the talks.

Among the likely outcomes are joint declarations on economic security, artificial intelligence and energy resilience. The two sides are also expected to announce progress on a green ammonia project in Odisha and expand cooperation in the biogas sector.

The summit is expected to conclude with a joint statement, along with several agreements across key strategic and economic sectors. Nearly 120 private-sector agreements may also be showcased, underlining the growing business partnership between India and Japan.
