New Delhi: Meta is set to lay off around 200 employees in the United States as part of a broader restructuring aimed at aligning its workforce with long-term artificial intelligence goals.
The job cuts are expected to impact teams primarily in Silicon Valley locations, including Burlingame and Sunnyvale, with the process likely to be completed by the end of May.

The restructuring reflects the company’s growing emphasis on artificial intelligence. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been steering the organisation toward becoming an “AI-first” company, focusing heavily on emerging technologies such as generative AI, machine learning, and virtual reality.
This transition is not limited to workforce reduction but extends to a wider reorganisation of internal structures and priorities.
One of the most notable changes is the gradual elimination of traditional middle management positions. The company is replacing these roles with new designations such as “AI Builder,” “Org Lead,” and “Pod Lead.”
These roles are designed to prioritise hands-on technical involvement over conventional supervisory functions. Reports indicate that hiring for standard mid-level management roles has already declined significantly compared to last year.
The new structure signals a shift in expectations from employees. Instead of purely managerial responsibilities, roles are being redesigned to require active participation in product development and innovation.
This approach is expected to accelerate project timelines and improve efficiency, particularly in high-priority AI initiatives.

The latest layoffs follow earlier workforce reductions within Meta’s Reality Labs division, where approximately 10% of employees were let go earlier this year. The continued cuts indicate a sustained effort to streamline operations and redirect resources toward strategic priorities.
Meta’s restructuring highlights a broader trend across the technology sector, where companies are increasingly prioritising AI capabilities. The shift may pose challenges for non-technical professionals, particularly those in traditional management roles.
Industry observers believe other tech giants could adopt similar strategies as competition intensifies in the AI space.
