Doha: Qatari authorities have once again arrested former Indian Navy Commander Purnendu Tiwari. His family claims he was taken into custody earlier this month and sent to jail on December 6. His family has now appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to intervene and secure his release.

Purnendu Tiwari was among the eight former Indian Navy officers who were arrested in Qatar on August 16, 2022, and sentenced to death. Following diplomatic efforts, the Qatari government pardoned seven of them, and they returned to India in February last year.

However, Purnendu Tiwari could not return to India due to a separate legal case. According to Ministry of External Affairs officials, Tiwari was facing a separate financial investigation.

PM Modi had raised the matter with the Emir of Qatar
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the matter with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, during his visit to India.

He also appreciated the commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Indians residing in Qatar and highlighted the strong diplomatic relations between the two countries. Tiwari is currently in jail and has only been able to speak to his family twice in the past few days.
