Zelensky warns of intensified war in 2026.
Moscow: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday warned that Russia is preparing to make 2026 a new "year of war" against his country. Speaking in his nightly address, Zelensky responded to statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who affirmed Moscow's determination to achieve its objectives in Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized the importance of alerting international partners to Moscow's intentions.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin stated at a Russian defence ministry meeting that the goals of the "special military operation" in Ukraine would certainly be achieved. He insisted that while Russia prefers diplomatic solutions, it would resort to military action to secure territories it claims as its own if Kyiv and its foreign allies refuse substantive negotiations. Putin’s comments underline Russia's continued focus on Donetsk, Crimea, Lugansk, and Kherson regions, which it formally annexed in 2022.
Diplomatic efforts between Ukraine, the United States, and European partners have so far struggled to produce a consensus on territorial concessions. Zelensky described the initial US proposal as heavily favouring Russia, which would have required Kyiv to cede parts of the Donetsk region and effectively recognise Russian control over Crimea, Donetsk, and Lugansk. Despite recent discussions in Berlin, Zelensky stated that key differences remain unresolved.
Putin accuses European leaders of “whipping up Hysteria” amid war with Russia
The Kremlin has indicated that Russia is awaiting details from Washington on the outcomes of the Berlin talks. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian officials expect information from American counterparts regarding the progress made with Ukraine and European leaders. Meanwhile, Moscow continues to push the narrative that its military and diplomatic objectives will be accomplished, whether through negotiation or force.
Zelensky is expected to attend a summit in Brussels on Thursday, where he aims to persuade European Union leaders to approve the use of frozen Russian assets to bolster Ukraine's defence capabilities. He stressed that Putin's bellicose statements are intended not only for Ukraine but also as a signal to the international community, particularly the United States. Zelensky urged partners to recognise Russia’s actions and respond firmly to avoid undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts.

With both sides signalling determination to achieve their aims, the war in Ukraine shows no signs of easing. Russia’s aggressive posture and Zelensky’s warnings of a “year of war” next year highlight the continued volatility in Eastern Europe. The international community remains cautious, balancing efforts to support Ukraine while seeking a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.
