New Delhi: Russia has claimed that its air defence systems intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones during a large-scale overnight aerial assault, marking one of the biggest drone attacks since the conflict began.

According to the Russian Defence Ministry, the drones were intercepted across more than a dozen regions, as well as over the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The operation highlighted the growing scale of long-range drone warfare between the two countries.

Moscow was among the regions targeted during the overnight strikes. City authorities said air defence units successfully intercepted dozens of drones approaching the capital.

Moscow And Other Regions Targeted

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said at least 47 drones heading toward the Russian capital were shot down before reaching the city.

Emergency services were deployed to locations where drone debris fell. Officials said there were no reports of casualties or significant damage in Moscow.

Authorities in the Tula region, located south of the capital, also reported drone activity. Regional officials said a private house was damaged in the Shchekino district, while one woman sustained injuries during the incident.

Drone Warfare Continues To Escalate

The latest attack comes amid a sharp increase in Ukraine's long-range drone operations targeting military and energy-related infrastructure inside Russia.

In recent months, Ukrainian drone strikes have focused on oil refineries, fuel depots and strategic facilities believed to support Russia’s military operations.

Last week, a drone attack reportedly triggered a fire at an oil refinery in southeastern Moscow, highlighting Kyiv’s expanding ability to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.

Conflict Enters New Phase

As the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues into its fifth year, drones have become one of the primary tools used by both sides.

Large-scale aerial attacks are now a regular feature of the conflict, with each side investing heavily in drone technology to target infrastructure, military assets and logistics far beyond the front lines.
