MEA spokesperson highlights efforts to secure release of Indians in Russian Army (Images: X)
New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday issued a fresh advisory urging Indian citizens to avoid joining the Russian armed forces, warning that such recruitment carries serious risks amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. The government said it continues to receive reports of Indian nationals being recruited into the Russian military despite repeated advisories highlighting the dangers involved.
The MEA said Indian citizens should remain cautious while exploring employment opportunities abroad and avoid falling for job offers from unverified individuals or agencies. The ministry stated that several cases have emerged where people accepted offers to join the Russian armed forces, allegedly expecting financial benefits and later seeking government assistance for release.
The government reiterated that joining a foreign military during an active conflict exposes individuals to severe risks.
The foreign ministry also raised concerns over instances where some Indian nationals reportedly sought to give up their Indian citizenship and obtain Russian passports before joining the Russian armed forces. The MEA advised citizens to carefully consider the long-term consequences of such decisions and understand the potential dangers involved.
The government urged Indians not to take steps based on temporary financial incentives without assessing the possible consequences.
MEA said the Indian government remains engaged with Russian authorities to ensure the safety, well-being and early release of Indian nationals serving in the Russian military. According to the ministry, 139 Indian nationals had been released from the Russian Army by July, while efforts were continuing for the release of others reportedly still associated with the Russian forces.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had earlier said that discussions with Russian authorities were underway to secure the release of remaining Indian citizens.
MEA also warned citizens against accepting overseas employment offers from suspicious individuals, organisations or unregistered agents. The ministry advised Indians to verify job opportunities carefully and check whether recruiting agencies are officially registered before travelling abroad for employment.
MEA said it has also received information about foreign nationals being recruited into the Russian armed forces through non-public entities, including voluntary groups. The ministry once again appealed to Indians to exercise due diligence and avoid offers that involve military service or conflict-related risks.
