New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to visit India in September to participate in the BRICS Summit 2026 that will be held in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.
The announcement was made by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, confirming Putin’s participation in the summit hosted under India’s BRICS presidency this year.
This will be Putin’s second visit to India within a year. He had earlier travelled to New Delhi in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, where he held extensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on bilateral cooperation and strategic ties.

India assumed the BRICS chairmanship for 2026 and has been organising several meetings and diplomatic engagements linked to the grouping throughout the year.
The upcoming summit is expected to bring together leaders from major emerging economies at a time of shifting global geopolitical equations and increasing focus on multilateral cooperation among developing nations.
The previous BRICS Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2025 under the theme of strengthening cooperation among Global South nations for more inclusive and sustainable governance.
Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also visited India for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and met Prime Minister Modi to discuss regional and international developments, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
BRICS was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to strengthen economic, political and strategic coordination among emerging economies.
Over the years, the grouping has expanded significantly with countries such as Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joining the bloc, widening its influence across Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

The alliance collectively represents a substantial share of the global population and economy and has increasingly focused on reforms in international financial institutions and enhancing cooperation among member nations.
Despite India strengthening ties with Western nations, Russia continues to remain one of New Delhi’s most important strategic partners, especially in defence and energy sectors. A major portion of India’s military hardware, including systems like the S-400 air defence system, Sukhoi fighter aircraft and BrahMos missiles, has Russian origins or collaboration.
The upcoming summit is expected to further deepen strategic and economic coordination between India and Russia alongside wider BRICS cooperation.
