New Delhi: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is facing a difficult political phase as pressure continues to build on his government from multiple fronts. Rising tensions with coalition partner Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), renewed controversy surrounding jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, and increasing coordination among opposition parties have created a challenging situation for the ruling alliance.

The political uncertainty comes at a time when the Shehbaz-led Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government is attempting to maintain stability while dealing with growing criticism from both allies and opponents.

Imran Khan Hospital Row Adds To Government Pressure

A major flashpoint has emerged over the handling of Imran Khan’s medical treatment. Pakistan’s Supreme Court had directed authorities to shift Khan from Adiala Jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for medical examination and treatment by a specialised medical board.

However, the government moved him to the state-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) instead, citing security concerns. After medical checks, Khan was sent back to jail.

The decision triggered strong reactions from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and his family, who accused the government of ignoring the court’s order. The controversy has increased pressure on the Shehbaz administration and raised the possibility of further legal challenges.

PPP-PML(N) Rift Deepens

The biggest challenge for Shehbaz Sharif may come from within his own ruling alliance.

The PPP, a crucial partner supporting the PML-N-led government, has hardened its position over several issues. PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has warned that his party may not support government legislation in Parliament until its concerns are addressed.

The disagreement has intensified over issues including alleged irregularities in Kashmir elections and debates over the creation of new provinces.

Bilawal has also indicated that political cooperation with the PML-N cannot continue under the current circumstances unless major concerns are resolved.

Opposition Parties Move Towards Joint Front

Adding to the government’s worries, opposition parties are working towards a coordinated strategy against the ruling coalition.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has held discussions with opposition leaders, including National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

The opposition groups have reportedly agreed in principle to work together inside Parliament, with further discussions expected on forming a broader political alliance.

Could A No-Confidence Motion Threaten Shehbaz Government?

With tensions rising among coalition partners and opposition unity gaining momentum, political observers are closely watching the next developments.

The PPP’s support could become crucial if opposition parties attempt to bring a no-confidence motion against the Shehbaz Sharif government.

For now, the prime minister faces the challenge of managing internal disagreements, responding to opposition pressure and preventing political instability from escalating into a larger showdown.
