‘Sovereignty Must Be Respected’: China’s Xi Jinping presents four-point proposal to resolve US-Iran war

China’s Xi Jinping has outlined a four-point plan to address rising tensions in West Asia, stressing sovereignty, rule of law, and stability as conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran deepens.

Beijing: Xi Jinping has spoken publicly for the first time on the escalating tensions in West Asia involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. During a meeting in Beijing with UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Xi emphasised the need to respect sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity across the region.

The meeting marked the first high-level visit from a West Asian leader to China since the conflict intensified, underscoring Beijing’s growing diplomatic engagement in the region.

Four-Point Proposal for Peace and Stability

Xi outlined a four-point proposal aimed at reducing tensions and restoring stability. Central to his approach is the principle of peaceful coexistence and the creation of a cooperative and sustainable regional security framework.

He stressed that all nations must respect each other’s sovereignty and ensure the protection of personnel, infrastructure, and institutions. His proposal also highlighted the need for a balanced approach that aligns development goals with security priorities.

Emphasis on International Law and Cooperation

Highlighting the importance of global norms, Xi called for adherence to international law, warning against a breakdown into disorder. He said maintaining the authority of international rules is essential to prevent instability and conflict escalation.

Additionally, he urged countries to work collectively to foster an environment that supports economic growth and long-term peace in the Middle East and Gulf region.

China’s Position on Strait of Hormuz Tensions

China also addressed disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global trade route. The comments follow concerns after Donald Trump announced plans related to a blockade.

Chinese officials reiterated the need for calm and restraint, stating that continued conflict is the root cause of instability in the region. Beijing emphasised that ensuring safe and uninterrupted passage through the waterway is in the global interest.

China has indicated it will continue to play a constructive role in easing tensions while advocating dialogue and diplomatic solutions.
