Washington: US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as “Trump Strait”, sparking fresh debate amid rising tensions in the Middle East.
Trump made the remark on his Truth Social platform, saying that if the waterway is under US control, its name should be changed.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT?” Trump wrote.
The latest proposal follows Trump’s previous moves involving geographical names. Earlier, he announced the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” after returning to office.
He also recently suggested renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” during a trade dispute with Canada.
Many of Trump’s past naming proposals initially appeared as comments before official action followed.
The suggestion comes at a time when the Strait of Hormuz has become a major flashpoint in the ongoing US-Iran confrontation.
The crucial waterway connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Nearly one-fifth of global oil supplies pass through this narrow passage.
Iran has reportedly taken steps affecting movement through the strategic route following escalating tensions with the US and Israel.
Fresh US military strikes near the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns over further escalation. Any disruption in the region could impact global energy markets and push oil prices higher.
The latest remarks by Trump have added another layer to an already tense geopolitical situation.
