Tehran: US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed a landmark peace agreement on Wednesday, marking a significant step toward ending a conflict that has disrupted regional stability and affected global supply chains.

The agreement was signed digitally after several days of negotiations aimed at reducing tensions and restoring economic and maritime activity across the Middle East.

Trump Says Peace Was Difficult To Achieve

Moments before signing the agreement, Trump acknowledged the challenges involved in reaching a settlement.

“This was not easy,” he said in a video that quickly gained attention on social media. Following the signing ceremony, Trump displayed the agreement, while French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed the development and described it as an important move toward regional peace.

Macron also expressed hope that the agreement would help stabilize energy markets and contribute to lower global energy costs in the future.

Reopening Of Strait Of Hormuz A Key Feature

One of the most significant elements of the agreement is the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil shipments. The deal outlines measures to restore maritime trade and navigation, with the United States agreeing to lift certain naval restrictions while Iran commits to reopening the strategic waterway.

Iran and Oman are also expected to discuss future arrangements related to the management and services of the strait.

Iran Welcomes Deal But Criticises Washington

While Iranian officials welcomed the agreement, they also portrayed it as evidence that US pressure had failed to achieve its objectives.

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf stated that the agreement would be judged by history and reiterated that Iran would continue exercising sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, including charging service fees after a temporary fee-free period expires.

Nuclear Commitments And Economic Support

The agreement includes a commitment by Iran not to pursue nuclear weapons and to cooperate with international inspectors in managing its enriched nuclear material under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In addition, the framework features a US-backed economic package worth USD 300 billion aimed at supporting Iran's reconstruction, economic recovery and long-term development.
