Toronto: Canadian authorities have arrested Abdul Ghafoori, a 32-year-old man accused in the killing of his Indian-origin partner Himanshi Khurana, nearly seven months after the murder. Toronto Police confirmed that Ghafoori was taken into custody at a Toronto airport on Friday and has been charged with first-degree murder.
Himanshi Khurana, 30, was found dead inside a residence in Toronto on December 20, 2025. Police had initially classified the case as a homicide and later identified it as an incident involving intimate partner violence. Investigators found that Khurana and Ghafoori were known to each other and were in an intimate relationship.
Following the discovery of Khurana's body, Toronto Police launched a detailed criminal investigation involving the Homicide Unit and Missing Persons Unit. A Canada-wide arrest warrant was issued against Ghafoori after he was identified as the primary suspect in the case.
According to police officials, the accused was located and arrested after coordination between Toronto Police’s Fugitive Squad, homicide investigators and national as well as international law enforcement agencies. Authorities have not revealed the country where Ghafoori was staying before his arrest or provided details about his movement after the alleged crime.
The accused was brought back to Canada to face legal proceedings. He appeared before the Toronto Regional Bail Centre after being charged under Canada's first-degree murder law. If convicted, the offence can lead to a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, depending on the circumstances established during the trial, including proof of planning and intent.
The case came to light on December 19, 2025, when Toronto Police received information about a missing woman from the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street West area. Officers immediately started a search operation and investigation to locate the missing person.
The following morning, at around 6:30 am, police officers discovered Himanshi Khurana's body inside a residence in the same area. After preliminary examination and investigation, authorities declared the death a homicide and transferred the case to specialised homicide investigators.
Police later confirmed that Khurana's death was Toronto's 40th homicide case recorded in 2025. During the investigation, officials released details about the suspect and appealed to the public for information that could help locate Ghafoori.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto also monitored the case and extended support to Himanshi Khurana's family. Indian diplomatic officials coordinated with Canadian authorities and assured assistance to the bereaved family during the investigation and legal process. Law enforcement agencies in Canada said the investigation and court proceedings against Abdul Ghafoori are underway.
