Washington: US President Donald Trump has escalated pressure on Iran, warning that Tehran has 10 to 15 days to accept a nuclear deal or “really bad things” will follow.  Speaking at a Washington forum, Trump insisted that the US seeks a meaningful agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme but remains ready to act militarily if diplomacy fails.

Iran, meanwhile, has rejected broader demands, maintaining its right to self-defence and warning that any attack will spark a regional response.

Massive US Force Posture in the Middle East

The United States has bolstered its military presence across the Middle East with additional aircraft, warships, and support units—strengthening its capability to launch operations if ordered. Trump aides have continued shuttle diplomacy with Tehran, but key issues such as missile limits and regional proxy ties remain unresolved.

UK Draws Line: RAF Bases Not Available for US Strikes

In a diplomatic twist, the United Kingdom has blocked permission for American forces to use British airfields, including RAF Fairford and the strategic base on Diego Garcia, for potential strikes on Iran. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government cited concerns over international law and avoided direct involvement in potential pre-emptive operations.

This refusal has drawn sharp criticism from Washington and strained the proposed transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, which houses the joint UK-US military facility.

Tehran’s Response: Defence, Drills and Defiance

Iran has not only rejected Trump’s ultimatum but conducted live-fire drills in and around the Strait of Hormuz a critical global energy chokepoint and engaged in military exercises with Russia. Tehran says it will “respond decisively” to any aggression and has threatened to target hostile forces should conflict erupt.

What Comes Next

Global leaders and regional powers are urging calm, even as oil markets and allied capitals watch anxiously. Diplomats stress that de-escalation hinges on renewed talks, but with both Washington and Tehran hardening positions, the risk of a wider confrontation remains high.
