Xi Jinping’s Taiwan Warning To US Sparks Global Alarm During Trump Meeting
New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping has warned that the Taiwan issue could push relations between China and the United States into a “very dangerous situation” if not handled carefully. His remarks came during a high-level meeting with US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Xi stressed that the Taiwan question remains the most sensitive and important issue in China-US relations, according to reports from Chinese state media.
China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, while Taiwan operates as a self-governing democracy with its own political system. Although both share cultural and historical links, Taiwan has developed as a separate democratic entity over the past several decades.
Beijing has increased military drills around the island in recent years, signalling pressure over what it calls reunification. However, Taiwan strongly rejects the “one country, two systems” model, with officials stating that its democratic identity is non-negotiable.
Surveys suggest that a large majority of Taiwan’s population does not support reunification with China.
For decades, the United States has maintained a policy of supporting Taiwan’s autonomy without formally recognising it as independent. However, shifting rhetoric from Washington has raised questions about future US commitment to the island’s defence.
Taiwanese leaders have repeatedly stressed their democratic system and opposition to political integration with China.
During the same meeting, Donald Trump praised Xi Jinping, calling him a “great leader” and expressing optimism about stronger economic ties between the two countries.
Trump emphasised the importance of reciprocal trade and said the US and China should move toward a more balanced economic relationship. He also expressed hope that discussions would lead to a “fantastic future” for bilateral cooperation.
The meeting comes at a time when global markets and geopolitical observers are closely watching US-China relations, especially amid tensions over Taiwan and ongoing trade negotiations.
Both sides signaled openness to dialogue, but deep disagreements over sovereignty, security, and economic influence continue to define the relationship.
