Tehran: Authorities in Iran have arrested 20 individuals accused of spying for Israel, as tensions in West Asia continue to escalate amid the ongoing conflict between the two nations.

The arrests were reported by Tasnim News Agency, which cited a statement from the prosecutor’s office in West Azerbaijan Province in northwestern Iran.

According to officials, the suspects were allegedly acting as informants and providing Israel with sensitive information related to Iranian military and security facilities.

Accused Of Sharing Military Locations

Iranian authorities claimed the detained individuals had been transmitting location details of strategic military assets and security sites to Israeli intelligence.

Officials said the group attempted to pass on classified information that could help Israeli forces identify potential targets inside the country. However, Iran has frequently announced arrests of individuals accused of espionage in the past, often without publicly presenting detailed evidence.

Arrests Come Amid Intensifying Conflict

The detentions come at a time when the confrontation between Iran and Israel has intensified, with both sides carrying out strikes and counterstrikes.

Sources familiar with Israel’s military strategy told Reuters that Israeli forces have recently been targeting checkpoints and other security positions inside Iran based on intelligence provided by informants on the ground. Such intelligence is believed to play a key role in identifying operational targets during the ongoing campaign.

Airstrikes Target Security Forces

According to officials cited by The Times of Israel, recent Israeli airstrikes across Iran have focused on members of government security forces who were reportedly involved in suppressing anti-government protests earlier this year.

A US and Israeli official said the strategy aims to weaken security structures and potentially make it easier for public demonstrations to re-emerge once the current wave of attacks subsides.

The arrests highlight the growing shadow war of intelligence gathering and counterintelligence operations unfolding alongside the broader military confrontation in the region.
