Washington: US President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on European allies to deploy military assets in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, ahead of fresh talks with Iran.
According to diplomats cited by Reuters, Mark Rutte informed European leaders that Washington expects concrete commitments, including warships or other capabilities, within days. The move signals a push for greater burden-sharing among NATO members during heightened tensions in the region.
Trump publicly criticised NATO members, suggesting that pressure is necessary for the alliance to act decisively. In a post on Truth Social, he expressed frustration with both allies and domestic stakeholders, indicating dissatisfaction over what he sees as inadequate support during the Iran conflict.
His remarks reflect longstanding concerns about NATO contributions, with the US President repeatedly calling for allies to take on a larger share of security responsibilities.
The development comes as the White House considers withdrawing American troops from certain North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries perceived as less supportive of US efforts.
Reports suggest that these forces could be redeployed to nations viewed as more cooperative, marking a potential shift in US military posture in Europe. While earlier rhetoric hinted at a complete withdrawal from NATO, current proposals indicate a more targeted approach.
Meanwhile, the European Union has rejected suggestions of imposing tolls on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. A European Commission spokesperson stated that international law guarantees freedom of navigation and does not permit such charges.
The stance follows Iran’s proposal to introduce a toll system to help fund post-conflict reconstruction, despite agreeing to reopen the waterway during a temporary truce involving the US and Israel.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical global transit route, making stability in the region a priority for major economies. Trump had earlier floated the idea of a joint US-Iran management arrangement for the passage, though Washington has since insisted on unrestricted access.
