New Delhi: The death of an Indian merchant navy sailor in Venezuela has sparked concern after his family alleged that several internal organs were missing when his body was returned to India.
The case involves 33-year-old Rakesh Chauhan, a resident of Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, whose remains arrived in India after his reported death from cardiac arrest in May. His family has now demanded a detailed investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The Federation of Seafarers’ Unions of India (FSUI) raised the issue, stating that Chauhan’s body was sent home without an autopsy report or detailed explanation from Venezuelan authorities.
After the family requested another examination, a post-mortem conducted in India reportedly noted the absence of several organs, including the brain, heart, lungs, kidneys and other internal body parts.
The report also mentioned multiple stitched incisions on the body, including a long incision from the neck to the lower abdomen, suggesting that an earlier examination had taken place.
According to Chauhan’s family, they were initially informed by the company that he had suffered injuries after falling on the ship and was receiving treatment. Later, they were told that his condition had worsened and he had died.
The family said they were assured that the body would be returned quickly but claimed the remains reached Deoria after several weeks.
They have demanded action against those responsible and a complete investigation into the sailor’s death.
Doctors in India initially did not conduct an examination, stating that the body appeared to have already undergone an autopsy. A post-mortem was later carried out after an order from the district administration.
The report stated that the cause of death could not be determined due to the absence of major organs.
The seafarers’ organisation has urged Indian authorities and the embassy to seek answers from Venezuelan officials. It also called for transparency regarding the circumstances of Chauhan’s death and demanded justice for the family.
While organs are sometimes removed during medical examinations for testing, the lack of clear documentation has intensified concerns surrounding the case.
